Frederick Howard was born in Hoxton in London on 28 Sep 1892.  Prior to joining the Royal Navy he was a van guard.

He joined the Royal Navy on 21 October 1910 as a Stoker 2nd Class and served in the pre-dreadnought battleships HMS IRRESISTIBLE and KING EDWARD VII, the cruisers HMS INTREPID and DIAMOND. He joined HMS DOLPHIN ‘for Submarine Training’ on 27 October 1915 and was then drafted to HMS K13.

On 29 January 1917, K13 was carrying out acceptance trials in the Gareloch offshore of the Shandon Hydropathic Hotel.  Shortly after lunch the submarine dived to carry out some final checks.  The after end of the submarine was flooded through the engine room ventilators which had failed to shut properly.  All of those in the after part of the submarine were lost.

Frederick Howard was the twenty three year old husband of Minnie Marie Cashman (formerly Howard) of 82, Bonner Street, Victoria Park, London. He is buried in the Faslane Cemetery at Garelochhead.
