Alfred Breeley was born on 4 June 1892 at Stockport in Cheshire, the son of Frank and Annie Breeley (nee Broadhurst), one of four children. Frank Breeley was a publican, landlord of the Joiners Arms on Collyhurst Road, Stockport.
Alfred joined the service as an ERA 4th Class at HMS VIVID on 22 December 1914, serving in the pre-Dreadnought battleship HMS LONDON before entering the submarine service in October 1916.
He is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, panel 22, the Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery and on the HMS E49 memorial at Baltasound, Unst in the Shetland Islands.
