HMS TIGRIS (1939 - 1943)

TIGRIS TIGRIS Crest

HMS TIGRIS (Lt Cdr G R Colvin) sailed from Malta on 18 February 1943 for a patrol area to the South of Naples. On 24 February, a submarine that is thought to have been TIGRIS was sighted about 40 miles South West of Naples.

On the morning of 27 February, sonar contact on a submarine was gained by convoy escort UJ2210. The escort dropped 2 patterns of 15 depth charges. Copious quantities of air bubbles and oil were observed. Two more sticks of 15 charges were dropped that resulted in a huge air bubble, pieces of wood and more oil.

TIGRIS was declared lost with all hands on 10 March 1943 on failing to return to harbour..

My grandfather John Ferrie was a sailor on this submarine. He survived the sinking as he was hospitalised in Malta. Lucky for him as all fellow crew were lost. He survived the war and had a family which includes my late mother (so lucky for me also).

My grandmother's brother, Lt. Richard Morton Powell Eaton was lost aboard the Tigris. Commemorated at Stoke Poges Memorial Gardens alongside the ashes of his parents.
