Sub Lieutenant Alfred Samuel CARTER, SANF

Alfred Carter was born on 22 March 1920 in Ladysmith, South Africa, the son of Victor Charles and Rosina Letitia Carter (née Dicks). He was educated at Mansfield Road School, Durban.

He was a General Botha Cadet Draft 1934-5, then joined the Bank Line in 1936. In 1941 he became a Sub-Lieutenant in the Seaward Defence Force, where he remained for a year. He then joined the RNR and was afterwards transferred to the SANFVR.

He died when TRITON was sunk in the Aegean Sea East of Kafirea, Euboia Island, on 16 November 1942 by the German auxiliary submarine chaser UJ-2102.
