HMS SWORDFISH (1931 - 1940)
HMS SWORDFISH (Lt M A Langley) sailed from Portsmouth on 7 November 1940 for her twelfth patrol, with the intention of relieving HMS USK off Brest. Nothing was heard from her after she left harbour. She was thought to have been attacked and sunk by German destroyers but, in 1983, her wreck was located off St Catherine Point (the southernmost tip of the Isle of Wight) by divers. She is broken in two with her stern section upright and her bow section on its port side. It is thought that she struck a mine shortly after diving in the Channel.
