HMS L24 (1919 - 1924)
HMS L24 (Lt Cdr P L Eddis) was lost with All Hands after colliding with HMS RESOLUTION during an exercise with several warships off Portland on 10 January 1924. It is believed that L24 was submerged at periscope depth carrying out manoevures after a mock attack on another ship and was unaware of RESOLUTION’s position. It is then thought that as she started to surface she suddenly became aware, too late, of the looming battleship.
Admiral Sir Max Horton, then Captain (S) of the First Submarine Flotilla, described the incident as follows:
"L24 was lost on the 10 January 1924 and was commanded by an able and experienced Commanding Officer. This boat was on her first trip to sea after Christmas leave".
