HMS E50 (1916 - 1918)
HMS E50 (Lt R E Snook) survived a collision on 19 April 1917 with UC 62 whilst dived on patrol off the North Hinder Light Vessel. Although claimed as sunk, UC 62 returned to her base - as did E50.
On the morning of 21 January 1918, E50 cast off from HMS MAIDSTONE in Harwich and turned East into the North Sea to patrol off the coast of Denmark. She was not seen or heard from again and was declared overdue when she failed to return to her base on 31 January 1918. It is assumed that she struck a mine.
In 2011, a Danish diving expedition found and surveyed the wreckage of E50 that lay in three parts on the sea bed, 64 nm West of the coast of Denmark. The conning tower lay covered in fishing nets separate from the other two large pieces. The tower was successfully recovered to save further damage, cleaned and restored to a good condition and is now on public display in the Sea War Museum at Thyborøn, Denmark.
