HMS D5 (1910 - 1914)
On 3 November 1914, a force of German battlecruisers bombarded the town of Lowestoft. HM submarines D3, D5 and E10 were ordered to leave Gorleston and intercept the enemy off Terschelling.
While proceeding on the surface to the interception point, D5 struck a drifting British mine and was sunk. Only the five bridge crew, among them the commanding officer, Lt Cdr Herbert, survived.
The drifter Faithful bravely disregarded the danger of mines and approached the scene to rescue the survivors for which act the Master, James Collins, and his crew were awarded £97.
