HMS ARTEMIS (1946 - 1971)

ARTEMIS ARTEMIS Crest

HMS ARTEMIS (Lt Cdr R Godfrey) sank alongside at HMS DOLPHIN on 1 July 1971.  The submarine had just returned from a spell in Portsmouth Dockyard and was first filling external fuel tanks prior to refuelling.  Water flooded through the open engine room hatch which could not be shut as it was obstructed by power cables and the submarine sank quickly. All aboard, including a group of Sea Cadets were quickly evacuated by the Duty Petty Officer who escaped 13 hours later from the fore-ends by compartment escape, along with two other crew members.  She was raised on 6 July, decommissioned and sold to be broken up for scrap on 12 December 1971.
